Owls love to sit perched looking out the opening so I have added an Interior Perch approximately 3 inches below the entrance hole for the Owls to sit and look out.

This House has been built using Cedar Wood and has Interior Kerfs (Grooves) to assist baby fledglings to climb out, good ventilation, drainage holes in the floor and an easy open Roof for cleaning. The roof also has a substantial overhang providing additional shelter from the rain.

I’ve used both wood screws and wood glue during the construction of the Owl Nesting Box for additional strength. It measures approximately 18 inches by 8-3/4 inches by 7-1/2 inches providing lots of space for these feathered families who lay between 3 and 8 eggs. It weighs approximately 6-1/4 lbs. (2.9 Kgs) which unfortunately contributes to the price with shipping costs being so high these days.

One of the best times to install an Owl Nesting Box is late Fall to February because Owls start looking for nesting sites early during January and February in most areas.

To attract Owls it is suggested you add approximately 3 inches of new Wood Pet Shavings which are available at most Pet Stores. Do not use sawdust or wood shavings from regular construction as these may contain toxins. Owls also love to have a water filled birdbath nearby and a “staging” perch. You can easily nail in a strong stick perch to a tree or use a garden shepherds hook near your pole mounted nest box. As with all birdhouses face them out of the prevailing winds in your area.

If you don’t end up getting an Owl in late winter then maybe you will attract the American Kestrel who are looking for Nesting Boxes in early Spring.

If you would like to attract the very beautiful Northern Flicker it is suggested that you fill the Nesting Box to the top with new Pet Wood Shavings because being in the Woodpecker family they like to excavate their nesting sites as part of their mating ritual. One of the benefits of filling the Nesting Box with Wood Shavings in the Spring is that you will deter the invasive Starling from building their nests in it.

I prefer to mount these Nesting Boxes on a 1 inch diameter threaded metal pole readily available in the plumbing section of the Big Box Stores. You can buy the appropriate lengths that easily screw together in order to reach a height of at least 12 feet above ground. Metal Poles also deter squirrels from nesting in the box. If you are interested I can send you a link to a very helpful video on what to buy and how to pole mount a Birdhouse / Nesting Box using only a screw driver and a hammer.
