This beautiful birdhouse will attract songbirds like the Chickadee, Nuthatch and Titmouse as well as the Downy Woodpecker due to the hole size of 1-1/4 inches. This House has a Round Porthole Side Viewing Window with Metal Predator Guard, a Cedar Predator Guard around Entrance Hole, Interior Grooves to assist baby fledglings to climb out, good ventilation, shelter from the rain, drainage holes in the floor and an easy tilt side for cleaning,. Due to the width size of cedar lumber I have used a Cedar Reducer piece to achieve the recommended floor size of 4 inches by 4 inches and it has an interior height of 8 to 10 inches.
To attract these smaller birds it is recommended that you put two inches of Wood Shavings on the floor of the birdhouse. The shavings can be purchased at most pet stores.
If you would like to attract a Downy Woodpecker it is recommended that you fill the Birdhouse packed to the top with Wood Shavings as it is part of the Woodpeckers mating ritual to “clean house” and make their nest together!
Recommended placement is approximately 4 to 20 feet above ground depending on the bird you are trying to attract. Mount on a pole facing out of the wind, a fence post or in a tree. I would be happy to share a link demonstrating just how easy it is to pole mount a birdhouse using only a screwdriver and hammer if you need assistance.
